ENGLISH
Many nouns are made from verbs, but when this happens, the
words are pronounced differently. For the verbs where the stress was on the
second syllable, such as suspect (as
in I susPECT that the murderer was
Colonel Mustard), the stress moves to the first syllable when it is a noun.
So we say The main SUSpects are Colonel
Mustard and Professor Plum.
This different stressing of words also helps us hear the
different between accepted nouns such as whiteboard (which we call a
WHITEboard) and something completely different but which uses the same words –
say, a white BOARD (a piece of wood that’s white).
As you pay attention to this, you’ll hear how these rules
are used in everyday English.

SOURCE PROJECT
Look at how the history of this group has been presented in
different contexts.
- What
narrative is presented in a particular source?
- What
different narratives are there?
- What
is responsible/behind the different narratives?
o different
facts (or omissions of facts)
o different
interpretations of facts/material
o different
motives
o different
theories being applied to the material
Your sources:
- You
are encouraged to bring in different sorts of sources, because this can allow
for analyses where you can demonstrate different skills, different lines of
thinking.
- You
are encouraged to use archives and primary sources (letters, newspaper
articles, government documents . . .). In particular, it can be valuable to use
primary sources in comparison with other documents.
- Each
person should aim to analyze two or three sources.
- Think
about that for any additional researching you do on your topic in general, you
need to consider what sources you are using there. For example, if you’re trying to understand how and why
Vikings went to Ireland, or if you’re looking for information regarding why
there were Americans/Europeans in the middle of North America in the mid-19th
century as some background information for yourself, you need to keep track of
those sources and you need to be using source criticism in the selection of those
sources. When I say source
criticism, I’m referring back to the skills we worked on last year regarding
authorship, publisher, transparency of information.
- There
are other source evaluation criteria we can bring to the few sources that will be the
heart of your work here. But we can discuss that later.
Presentation of work:
I said that we will talk w. 37 regarding how and when to present your work.

Joakim shared a YouTube video that summarizes many of the ideas presented by Jared Diamond in his book Guns, Germs, and Steel, which was the basis of much of what I was presenting regarding the question: Why did Europeans conquer the Americas and not the other way around.
